A pure sequence is one where you have three or more than three cards from the same suit without any jokers in the hand. The sequence must begin with an Ace and end at a King or a Queen to be called a pure sequence. Apart from this, a pure sequence can also begin with a numeric 2 card.

An impure sequence contains three or more than three cards from the same suit with at least one joker. Similar to a pure sequence, this sequence should begin with an Ace or a 2 and end at a King or a Queen card.

A set is another important term in 7 card gin rummy. When you have either three or four identical cards from different suits, it is known as a set.

Apart from melding, drawing is an important move in 7 card gin rummy. While drawing a card, you may do it from the stockpile or the discard pile. Remember, you must discard your card into the discard pile once you draw a card from the stockpile or the discard pile.

How to Play 7 Card Rummy?

The Deal

A standard 52-card deck with no jokers.

If there are more than six players, use two decks.

The dealer deals clockwise, one card facing down, to each player. The process repeats until each player has seven cards. Place the subsequent card face-up at the center of the table, which will be the “Discard pile.” Place the rest of the remaining cards adjacent to it, creating the “Stock pile.” Each player can pick up and assemble the cards accordingly. The player who sits to the left of the dealer commences play.

The Object of the Game

You should become the first player to possess a specific matching combination. You can either have three (or more cards) of a kind (for instance, three Jacks and four 8s). You can possess a straight of the same suit (for instance, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 of Clubs or 2, 3, 4, 5 of Clubs and Jack, Queen, King of Hearts). You can also have a mix of the two (for instance, 2, 3, 4, 5 of Clubs and three 7s). One can play Aces as 1s or as the game's high card. You cannot use them as both. For instance, K, A, and 2 are not a recognized combination. A, 2, 3, or Q, K, A of the same suit are accepted.

Gameplay

Each player's turn consists of two stages:

Every turn begins with the player drawing (i.e., picking a card into their hand of cards) a single card from the stock or the discard pile.

To complete their go, the player should discard a single face-up card onto the discard pile.

Each player picks up seven cards from the table. The player seated left of the dealer starts the game. They must take one card from either pile – be it the stock or the discard pile. We recommend picking the face-up card only if you feel you can use it to form a combination with the other cards in your hand. If you do not require the card that faces up, go for the card from the face-down pile. After the player sees the chosen card, they must select a card from their hand to discard.

The card being discarded must be a card they need the least in their journey to victory. Once the player decides this, they should put the facing up atop the original or replace it in case it was picked up. Play resumes in the same fashion, clockwise. The other players can only pick a face-up card from the top of the pile. When another card is placed on top of it, it is considered out of play. It can only reenter the game if the face-down pile is concluded and needs re-shuffling and replacing.

Winning a Hand

An essential rummy rule for 7 cards states that, you need to arrange all seven cards in your hand into two groups (or melds) – a group of three cards and another group of four cards. Each group can either be a Set or a Run.

The first player to assemble all seven cards can declare “Rummy” and ends up becoming the winner of that round (referred to as a “hand”).

If the group wishes to resume playing, the person sitting on the dealer's left must pick up the deck and shuffle. They become the new dealer, and the game continues in the same manner as before.

If every card in the stock pile has been picked, the next player takes the entire face-up discard pile and simply flips it over. This then becomes the fresh face-down stock pile.

It is essential to note that some players prefer shuffling the old discard pile before they turn it into the new stock pile to avoid a situation where players take advantage of memorizing the cards.

Winning a 7-Card Rummy Game

The winner, as mentioned above, is the first player to possess a winning combination in their hand. Once you pull up the card that wins, you should still discard one card from your hand and put it face down in the face-up pile of cards on the table to signify that you are done with the game. Then, show your cards to all the other players, and if it proves to be a winning combination, you win the game!

Scoring in 7 Card Gin Rummy

Scoring occurs according to 7 card Gin Rummy rules. Your score in a 7 card Gin Rummy game depends on the strength of your cards. This score, when combined in multiple rounds, helps in deciding the winner and losers of the game. The player with the lowest score wins after all the rounds end or when a score threshold is reached.

Keep in mind the following information about the point system for cards:

The Ace is worth one point.

Face cards (king, queen, and jack) are worth ten points each.

The numeric cards are worth their face value.

The Joker does not hold any points in this system.

To calculate the score, add up the points for each card. For example, a hand consisting of a king, an ace, a queen, a jack, and a 5 would have a total of 26 points (10 + 1 + 10 + 10 + 5).

The winner is the player with the lowest points in each round. The winner receives a final score of 0 for winning a round. Interestingly, forming a rummy (aligning all cards in a sequence) is the best way to win a round. A player who forms a rummy immediately wins the round without calculating their points.
